Kids & Horses, in collaboration with Connected Horse, is offering evidenced based workshops to benefit people living with early stage dementia and their care partners. The program was developed from research conducted at Stanford University and the University of CA, Davis. This four Saturday workshop, running from 12:30-3:00, on April 25, May 2,9,and 16 allows participants to gain awareness, alleviate anxiety, and self-regulate their responses to living with the effects of dementia. Much of this is done through activities with horses and other participants. The activities are repeated from Saturday to Saturday with additional activities added each week to encourage success and confidence. Activities include over the fence, grooming, leading, and at liberty. No horse experience in necessary. The work with the horses enables participants to see their situation in a different light and have the strength to not give in to the disease. A bond is formed among the participants, the facilitators that create the environment, and the volunteers that are with them as discussions follow each activity. It is a truly an “In the Moment” experience that encourages participants to do things they never imagined and continue to be able to live a full life in spite of the diagnosis.
